These photos were taken at the Fillmore East on New Years Eve, 1969, the late show. This is the very show that was recorded to produce the legendary "Band of Gypsys" album. I was the ONLY photographer who shot this particular show in color. These four images and an additional 86 like them were purchased by Paul Allen's "Experience Music Project Museum" in Washington State, in 1999. Paul Allen's devotion to his museum is passionate, ensuring these images will live on forever, carefully guarded and exhibited by the museum's curator. The panoramic montage I created above is an homage to the song "Machine Gun". I believe that night Hendrix made history with perhaps the greatest guitar solo ever recorded. The lighting is just as it was during this historical performance.
I was lucky enough to be the house photographer at Bill Graham's Fillmore East for three years from 1968 to 1971 when it closed. All of the color photographs that adorned the walls of the Fillmore East were taken by me, starting at the tender age of just fourteen. I got to meet and shoot all of the legends of the time and remember it like it was yesterday. For the artists I idolized to appreciate my work was the ultimate compliment for me. My photos also hung in the homes of these legends as well, which I considered the highest compliment that could be paid.
