Frank Zappa & Other Legends
Concert Photography

I had the distinct pleasure of being Frank Zappa’s “concert” New York area
photographer for more than ten years. I had
all access passes for years and have thousands of
color slides as a result. These particular pictures represent two Frank Zappa
first and last events in one. Firstly, this is the only time EVER that Frank
allowed any photographer ever to shoot from either the stage or the wings while
in concert. He owed me a favor and hesitantly agreed
for the first and last time ever. Recognizing a once in a lifetime event, I shot
with a medium format Hasselblad camera.
They were shot at The Palladium in New York circa 1980. The results
were unlike anything Frank or I had ever seen. We both
loved them. The photographic quality remains unequalled, even by me.
Although the examples shown here don't begin to do justice to the
actual images, they are the sharpest most grain-free photos
possible. Even at
poster sizes they remain unequaled in quality. Many of the images were Frank's personal favorites, and there was never a
more devout perfectionist than FZ. The picture above, "Up Close" is of Frank
playing his legendary custom Gibson SG. I was standing next to Frank, on-stage as I took
it while he posed for me. A truly great monent.
The photo above, "FZ Conducts" is a perfect example of
what made this evening so rare. In this shot FZ is facing away from the audience,
conducting the band. If I had not been on stage, to the left of drummer Terry Bozio, it
would never have been possible. Moments like these turned out to be once in a lifetime.
Like Zappa himself.
In 'Soloing," FZ lets loose with one of his amazing and
beautiful solos. Once again, the ability to shoot from the wings makes this photo
possible. Without Frank's cooperation, none of this would have been possible. Most of
these images, and the ones you'll see later are available for sale in various forms at
varying prices. As you can see, the four shown here are from hand-signed limited editions
of 50. You will be directed through finding out any information you may require. Please
